Every Internet browser has settings you can change, including privacy options, search engine preferences, autofill and autocomplete behavior, and more. To access your Internet browser settings, choose your browser from the list below and follow the instructions.
- Open the Safari web browser on the Mac, navigate to the website of your choice to manage the preferences for that specific website. Click Safari from the Mac menu, click Settings for this website. Safari opens a new drop-down menu in the middle of the Safari browser window with the permissions you can manage directly from the web browser.
- Open the Safari browser and select History in the menu bar located at the top of the screen. You'll see a drop-down menu with the titles of the web pages you visited recently. Select a website to load the respective page or select one of the previous days at the bottom of the menu to see more options.
Customize settings for each website in Safari on Mac. Choose how you work with individual websites. For example, for a website that has small text and images, you can increase the page zoom. Or another website might need to know your location to work effectively, so you can allow that site to know where you are without always asking for permission. Recently, Safari was released for Windows computers as well, much to the jubilation of many. One of the great things about Safari is it allows you to customize every aspect of your user experience, tab settings included, and adjusting it on your Safari browser is a cinch! Open the Safari program. You can change your Safari settings from within the Safari browser. Make sure that it's the active program so that the 'Safari' menu appears in the upper-left corner.
Google Chrome
- Open the Google Chrome browser.
- In the upper-right corner, click the Customize and control Google Chrome icon.
- In the drop-down menu that appears, select Settings.
Mozilla Firefox
- Open the Mozilla Firefox browser.
- Click the menu icon in the upper-right corner of the browser window.
- In the drop-down menu that appears, select Options.
Safari
- Open the Safari browser.
- Select from the menu bar in the top-left corner of the screen.
- In the drop-down menu that appears, select Preferences.

Microsoft Edge
- Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
- Click the Settings and more icon in the upper-right corner of the browser window.
- In the drop-down menu that appears, near the bottom, select Settings.
Microsoft Edge Legacy
- Open the Microsoft Edge Legacy browser.
- Click the More icon in the upper-right corner of the browser window.
- In the drop-down menu that appears, select Settings.
Microsoft Internet Explorer
- Open the Internet Explorer browser.
- In the upper-right corner, click the Tools icon.
- In the drop-down menu that appears, select Internet options.
Opera
- Open the Opera browser.
- In the upper-left corner, click the Menu button.
- In the drop-down menu that appears, select Settings.

Changing Safari Settings
We look at the Safari web browser in Chapter 7, 'Surfing the Web,' but you can customize it right here in the Settings app.

- Tap Safari from the list of settings on the left.
- Select which search engine to use. Google is the default, but you can also choose Yahoo! or Bing.
- Adjust your AutoFill settings for filling out forms on the web. Your iPad can pull from your contact info in the Contacts app or from data you previously filled in on the same or similar web pages. Set Names and Passwords to On to have Safari remember your username and passwords for some websites.
- Decide whether you want to immediately jump to a new tab, or stay on the current page when you open a new tab and let the tab open silently in the background.
- Choose whether to show the Bookmarks bar all the time or only when you have saved bookmarks in the bookmarks bar.
- Fraud Warning checks websites against a public database of websites to avoid. I recommend leaving this switch on. If you try to follow a link to one of these sites, you get a warning and a chance to change your mind before loading the page.
