I have an early 2008 2.8GHz C2D iMac, and my wifi card is starting to give out on me. This would make sense, as it's the original card that the system came with, and it is 10 years old!
I wanted to know if I could replace my old card with the Airport Extreme card found in the ‘09, ‘10, and ‘11 iMac models. I figure if I'm going to replace it, I might as well go with a slightly newer model that would fit the airport connector on my Mac.
Any advice would be appreciated.
There exists an unofficial patcher which adds support for older Macs to the Sierra installer, with caveats. You can download the patcher from http://dosdude1.com/sierrapatch.html. The link itself gives the answer macOS Sierra Patcher Tool for Unsupported Macs Since it's unsupported, it's by definition, riskier than install Sierra on supported Macs.

You can take a look at dosdude1's Sierra, High Sierra, and Mojave patch tools that let you put those versions of macOS on unsupported Macs. If you are unsure if your Mac is compatible or not, just download the Patch Tool and when you open the patch tool, if your Mac is compatible there will be no warning but if your Mac is not compatible with the patch there will be a warning.

@ajcooke01 - This series RAM is very limited. The newer MacOS's really need the bigger RAM footprint. I try not to push these type of solutions on anything less than i5 based system.
@danj My teacher had an old Core 2 Duo iMac from 2009 and I got Mojave on it using the patch too. It works just fine, even with 4 GB of RAM. Anything older then Core 2 Duo I would agree with you about not pushing too hard.

The official release date of Sierra was September 20, 2016. Note, it no longer has 'X' in the official name.
Macs that shipped with Sierra can be updated directly to Mojave from the Mac App Store.

High Sierra is also still available as of September 30, 2018. The only exception is that High Sierra needs a minimum of 10.8 installed, and will reformat SSD and and Flash drives to APFS rendering it invisible to Sierra and older systems.
Note: some downloads may have trouble because of Apple's certificates. This thread discusses the issues around that:
Sierra can be upgraded from 10.7.5 directly if all its associated updates have been installed.
Any version of 10.7 can be upgraded in this sequence before installing
newer operating systems if the hardware is supported:
1. 10.7.5 Combo
2. Supplemental to both Combo and Delta
3. 10.7.5 Security Update 2014-004
4. 10.7.5 Bash update.

leaving 10.10 and 10.9 off the App Store as discussed here.
Not all 10.6.8 compatible Macs are compatible with 10.11 either.

Apple had kept the same minimum hardware requirements for Mac OS X 10.8 through 10.11.
Here are the new requirements with the Machine ID (x,x) as stated in the System Profiler for Mac OS 10.12 Sierra.
- MacBook (Late 2009 or newer) 6,1
- MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or newer) 6,1
- MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer) 3,1
- Mac mini (Mid 2010 or newer) 4,1
- iMac (Late 2009 or newer) 10,1
- Mac Pro (Mid 2010 or newer) 5,1
These requirements are the same for High Sierra, the operating system that succeeded Sierra.

Security Update 2018-005 was released October 30, 2018.
